The 2021 Riesling Niederhäuser Hermannsberg Grosses Gewächs, from shale mixed with melaphyr, is the current release. At five years of age, it shows incipient evolution and signals immediately that it is only just starting to unfold. Smoke still pervades the stony dust on the nose. Stone, sea salt crystals and citrus define the palate with their straightness, vigor, concentration and utter lemon pith intensity. This is superbly stony, wonderfully smoky, totally exciting and deliciously uncompromising. What a wine, what tension, what length. (Bone-dry)
