Karsten Peter noted that a special feature of 2025 was that the “rested” vines compensated for last year’s frost loss with much fruit set. “We halved bunches and green harvested like we rarely had before,” he said. Spring was moist, summer relatively dry and ripeness advanced, especially on the exposed slope of the Kupfergrube. “Two thousand twenty-five was an early year. The rains that came in early September were not optimal, nor were the hot days of early September, so we had a concentration effect. We had sugar but not real ripeness,” Peter remembered. Picking started in the second week of September and finished on October 3, hurrying against rot. Though yields were one-third less than the long-term average, the sorting paid off, as the wines are brilliantly clean-cut and generous with juicy fruit.

The 2025 Riesling 7 Terroirs is, after the frost of 2024, back to its usual composition, with the pre-harvest and younger vines from the seven classified sites. Creamy orange and smooth ripeness are strikingly present on the nose. This is immediate, ripe pleasure, plunging into stony, savory orange, mandarin and tangerine juiciness, with dryness, energy and verve. (Bone-dry).

The 2025 Riesling vom Schiefer is entirely picked in the Hermannsberg, made in Stück and stainless steel. A little touch of mango hovers above the lemon and shale savor. The 2025 Riesling vom Vulkan is the younger sibling of the Kupfergrube GG. From both Stück and stainless steel, it shines with peachy savoriness. It glows with fruit, almost with roasted peach. The palate has all the fleshiness and juiciness of that peach, framed with mandarin zestiness. The savory, salty tone underneath is there but will take time to show itself. The 2025 Riesling Schlossböckelheimer Felsenberg Grosses Gewächs is from volcanic formations of porphyry and melaphyre, faces southwest and gets the very last of the evening sun. Supple, smooth yellow apple is only hinted at tenderly on the nose. The palate suggests ripest pale peach juiciness washing over hard, stony rock, a gorgeous and exciting contrast, a thrill in itself. This has immense drive, focus and power. It has brilliant energy. The 2021 Riesling Schlossböckelheimer Kupfergrube Grosses Gewächs is the current release and still smoky, still reductive, still youthful and brooding on the nose. Right from the off, the vibrancy, the electricity and the uncompromising, stony thrill are a picture of purity. Everything is yet to unfold; for now, this is lemon zest and stone, with untold depth and exquisite concentration. The presence of that vivid smokiness shows that this has huge potential. The 2021 Riesling Niederhäuser Hermannsberg Grosses Gewächs, from shale mixed with melaphyr, is the current release. At five years of age, it shows incipient evolution and signals immediately that it is only just starting to unfold. Smoke still pervades the stony dust on the nose. Stone, sea salt crystals and citrus define the palate with their straightness, vigor, concentration and utter lemon pith intensity. This is superbly stony, wonderfully smoky, totally exciting and deliciously uncompromising. What a wine, what tension, what length. (Bone-dry)
