Jorge Monzón is a highly regarded winemaker with experience in Bordeaux and Burgundy, honing his craft at estates such as Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Vega Sicilia, and Arzuaga. Monzón has operated Dominio del Águila with his wife, Isabel Rodero, since 2010. Together, the pair has restored ancient underground cellars in La Aguilera and revived century-old vineyards planted to mixed grape varieties at the edge of an oak forest. Monzón’s gentle pressing, extraction and lengthy aging in used barrels work in concert to yield a Burgundian take on Ribera del Duero, where intensity and nuance take precedence over sheer power. Monzón’s Albillo is a benchmark for the region, while the Pícaro bottling is an excellent introduction to the range. The Canta La Perdiz encapsulates the very essence of the Dominio del Águila aging philosophy—a wine with true staying power.

The 2021 Reserva comes from La Aguilera, Ribera del Duero. Fine plum, blackberry, soft herbs and delicate oak shape an expressive nose. The palate is dry, with chalky texture and juicy freshness that gradually builds tension. The finish is persistent and expressive. What stands out is the combination of subtle richness and fruit at the core. The vintage gives the wine a slightly darker profile, as the sandy-soil vineyards were not included in the blend.
